Two Years

This morning marks the second bandiversary for me. I can't believe it has been this long.

I used to wish for the will power to stick to a diet, that one never came through for me, so I got myself the band, and what do you know, my wish came true. That is the true meaning of wishing, wanting something so bad, you go out and do something about it. 

Now my wish is to get to goal. So I guess the real question is; do I want it bad enough that I do something about it? 

I have the tools, I have the knowledge and I have the support. I just have to put them all together and no one else can do that for me.

To celebrate my bandiversary I have complied a short list of how I am different now to before my surgery.

I have lost 40kg / 88lb (and have kept it off)
I feel healthy
I can move freely
I am even starting to run
I feel more confident in myself
I feel as though I have a place here in this community
I can climb stairs with out getting winded
I can sit in cafe seats
I was able to fly long distance and have to worry about fitting in the seats (it was a tight fit, but I did fit)
I can wear high heels
I do wear makeup (mostly just the eyes and lipstick cause I don't like my skin being smothered)
I am more confident when I walk into clothing stores
I still enjoy chocolate, but it is never the whole family block in one sitting anymore
I no longer cringe away from cameras

I am a much happier person and while I know I still have a way to go, posts like this are great for reminding myself how far I have come, and how well I have done so far. And how much I really want to get to goal!

I also want to thank each and every one of you who read my posts. Without your support it would have been a lot harder journey to date and I could see myself giving up along the way, but whenever I had those doubts, you have all encouraged me and inspired my with your words and your own blogs. The support I have found here is amazing. So thank you for sharing your stories and supporting me through mine.

Now I am off to start on year three :o) It is going to be a good year.

I really don't like the weather

So I should be celebrating my 2 year bandiversary tomorrow with a work trip up to the Whitsundays on a fantastic tour that was organised through work.

I should be in the process of packing and worrying about how I will fit in my scheduled c25k program at some great hotel while be surrounded by people who are on a tour that is totally revolved around food, yummy food and lots of it.

But I am not.

Yes the weather is affecting Queensland again (I know, I'm shocked too) to be honest, this bad weather is rather late, the affects of the climate change that aren't happening obviously :o)

It was decided to postpone the trip as even if the train does run, the weather is still not good enough to have a favorable and memberable trip. Or it could be memberable, but not in a good way!

Oh well, such is life. Just a pity that the tourism industry so often has to rely on the weather. I have planned a holiday for May to go to Cairns and I just hope that week is not affected. Normally I wouldn't think twice about it, but you can never tell when the wet season will actually end :o)

It is hump day people, so enjoy the rest of the week. I will be posting tomorrow for my two year bandiversary, very weird to be this far from surgery.

Week 104 Post-op

Firstly, lets get this over with:

Week 104 post-op weigh in, 
Starting weight: 151.9kg / 334.9lb
last week: 111.7kg / 246.2lb
Current weight: 111.9kb / 246.7lb
Change: gain of 0.2kg / 0.5lb
Total Weight Lost to Date: 40.0kg / 88.2lb

Yes there is a tiny gain. As I mentioned in yesterday's post, there are maybe lots of excuses, but I don't want to list them, they are always the same and you don't need to hear excuses.

So I will once again brush myself off and move forward.

Can I please just say a very big thank you to everyone for their support during my pity party last night. I know I have come a really long way. 40kg / 88lb is a fantastic sucess. If I was never to loose another pound, I would still be very happy with my band amd this journey, but I do not want to stay at this weight, and to get lower, I need to stop sabotaging myself and truly commit, not to you and not to my blog, but to myself.

This Thursday it will have been two years since I had the lapband and looking back, it has been great, not once have I ever regretted my decision,and I think that is the best. I hope you all have a fantastic Monday and week. I know I will :o)

Coffee vs No Coffee

Here are two days in my life lately:

My typical day with my misto coffee:
8am - Coffee
10am - Yoghurt and seeds
12 noon - Mince with a tomato sauce & cheese
2pm - Coffee
4:30pm - Ham & Cheese
7pm - Chicken or lamb with veges
~with this there is also 80 - 120 ounces of water

Now for a day without the usual coffee:
9:30am - yoghurt and seeds
11am - Ham & Cheese
12noon - Mince with a tomato sauce & cheese
1:30pm - coffee
3pm - chips
4pm - cheese
5:30pm - chocolate
7pm - Chicken or lamb with veges
~ with this there may be up to 80 ounces of water (but more like 40)

So can YOU guess what sort of day I had today, and yesterday for that matter?

Yep, the day with out the regular coffee.

I don't know what it is with the misto coffee, I think it is the fact that it is not as heavy and and not as milky, but it really helps me stay on track for the whole day. When I don't get the stuff from st@rbucks, my whole day is not the same. That means that my days off, and most weekends, done go this well. There is no st@rbucks near home, and to be honest, when I work on the weekends, the coffee isn't the same. The weekend crew at st@rbucks are not as good as the week staff!

Without the coffee, I have no stable plan throughout the day, no matter how hard I try.

So, now I know this, what do I do?

If there weren't so many coffee places about, I would seriously coinsider going into the st@rbuck coffee business for myself. Another option is that I need to be able to get the same mix elsewhere. Where, I'm not sure, but it is something to work on. And fast!

Thursday will be my two year 'bandiversary' and I wish I could be happy about it. But I am nowhere near where I thought I would be two years post op. I guess I am just not looking forward to tomorrow's weigh in, because I know that the last few days have not been great, and I can blame a lot of things, but I don't want to. What I want is to be able to stick to the plans I lay for myself!

Sorry for the pity party, I'm tired and going to sleep now! Every thing will be better in the morning, it's a Monday, so I'll be able to get a decent cup of coffee :D

Sam's Sunday Snaps - Pink

Just a quick shot of part of my garden, I was very surprised to see the frangipani flowers on the ground, I hadn't even noticed that it had been flowering, there are a few more buds on the tree, but no flowers at the moment.

Can I just say that this is my favourite effect on my camera, it takes black and white pictures and just picks up one colour.

So that's another week of Sunday Snaps from me. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Now for next week, the subject will be "time".

Ten Things Thursday

1. I saw 110.7kg / 244.1lb on the scale this morning, that is my previous low from January. To be honest I don't know why I have let myself be so unaccountable for so long. I have to stick to my current accountability, otherwise I wont see this number (or preferably lower) again.

2. Have I told you that I am enjoying the c25k program. While I have always wanted to run, I never actually thought I would enjoy it. But so far, the thrill of having my body run still thrills me.

3. Planning a trip for 2013 to go and do the Inca trail and am very excited, the plan is to do it in August, but I am hoping to persuade the other travelers to push it back another week or two, so that I can make it to Chicago for what BOOBs 2013. The trip is planned for 3 - 4 weeks in South America, so if it is moved back just a little it would not be too much of a stretch to add in the US for a side trip on the end of it. Here's hoping the plans go as I hope :o)

4. I have been watching a lot of BandedWendy on You Tube about her marathon this week end in LA, and then this week I found out that one of my Mum's co-workers is actually flying over there to run the race too. It sure is a small world :p

5. I also found out from a recent video, that Wendy works for a company that distributes Hint Mints, delicious mints, but I have only ever seen them at our international airports here in Australia, so I am getting my Mum's work co-worker to get me some, while she is over in the US. If I hadn't seen the video, I would never have remembered those mints, because I can't get them here.

6. I actually get to go on a 4 day holiday next week - I will be helping to host a holiday package that we have sold through work. Very excited, I'll be helping out while enjoying the great Whitsundays on Hamilton Island. All on works time.

7. While away I am going to aim to do at least one c25k session, by then I will be on week 5 (fingers crossed) and I do not want to miss a session as it will put me too far behind. I have a plan in place, I just need to stick to it.

8. Not liking blogger a lot at the moment, I have had to delete my blog roll, because I couldnt update it and I had all these new blogs I was following. I am now reading from the dashboard, but it is difficult to be sure that I haven't missed a blog post, and I am sure that I am missing some, because I'll get to a post and notice that I have not seen their previous post before. So I do apologies if I haven't commented as usual. I just seem to be missing a bit lately.

9. I think I actually felt some muscles in the back of my thigh the other day, mind you it was still under a layer of fat, but it was there.

10. And last but not least, I have to work this weekend, which is not the best news, but I do get Friday off instead, and since it is so close to the weekend, it almost feels like a mini weekend.... I did say almost :o)

Week 103 Post-Op

I checked and I am at week 103 post-op, that seems so weird!

Last Monday I was 111.0kg / 244.2lb
This morning I am 111.7kg / 245.7lb
- gain of 0.7kg / 1.5lb

Yeah, talk about one step forward and two steps back.

I know what happened, I snacked on the wrong foods, my meals were okay, but the in between snacking got real bad on a few of the days last week, it also doesn't help that yesterday I went out for coffee and had a piece of mud cake with it.

I looked it up and that one small bit of cake was half my days calorie intake. Yesterday I consumed 1330 calories, the cake was worth 643 calories, image how good my week would have been with out it, the saddest thing about it is that I had already had a cake outing on Saturday, so one would have been okay with me, I am in this for life, so I have to allow treats, but twice in two days is not a treat, it is part of the diet.

That is what I have to get through the think head of mine. If I ever want to get into the double digits of kilos, or onederland of pounds, I have to stop the daily treats.

Having just said that I am actually off to work, where there is a team morning tea with lots of things that are no good. So yet another hurdle to face. I am planning on mostly sticking to the fruit that I am taking. And I also have my high protein meals planned for the day as well. I will just make sure that I eat my breakfast before it is time for the tea, that way I won't be hungry and I can stay strong.

Good news on the exercise front, I am getting into a rhythm and have been three times in the last three days, I am up to week four in the c25k program, I did do day one yesterday, but I should have waited another day I think, I wasn't able to do the 5 minute stretches, I had to walk for about a minute in the middle of them, fully understandable, since I had finished week three on Saturday and before that I hadn't done anything for a week. So this morning I was on the elliptical trainer instead. Still a great cardio session, but a break from the c25k program.

I'll be doing day one of week four again tomorrow, I want to do it right before I move on to the next one.

I have a serious DVD problem - but the shelves also are great for the other things I need in my life, nik naks and a handy place for my HRM are just some of the things that stay on the shelves of this very big DVD case :o)

The next topic for these snaps will be 'Pink' so it is sure to be a colourful one.

A moment in time

Do you ever have those moments where you suddenly realise what you have been doing wrong all this time?

Yeah well I have had that moment with my lapband journey.

I really feel quite stupid about it, it is the basic rule and I have not been paying attention.


After watching a lot of you tube and ready blogs and seeing facebook photos of food and portions, I thought, fine, I will dig out my small 1 cup containers and only use them for a while...they are staying for the rest of my life!

Without realising it, my portions have grown. And not by a little either.

I have portioned out my meals for the last week and OMG what a difference. I am full after just a cup, it is only lasting me a couple of hours, so I am needing a snack between meals, so I will need to see about getting a small fill, but hello! The cup of food is what I am supposed to have been having all along.

To be honest, I am really pissed off at myself. If I had been doing this all along, I would have already been at my goal! But what is done, is done.

The last time I weighed in on my blog was February 03, and the scale said 113.0kg / 249.1lb and since then I have not commented on the scale, because that is pretty much were it has stayed! It has gone up a little and gone down a little, but always around the same.

That is until this last week when I started portioning my meals! In seven days I'm already down to 111.0kg / 244.7lb. So from last Tuesday through to today, Monday 05 March, I have lost 2kg / 4.4lb.

And another thing, while the change has been in portion sizes, there was also a little change in what I was eating. For the most part, I have concentrated on protein first... Yep, another band rule, something else I have not been doing so well.

In fact, when I go through the "golden rules of eating and exercise" as what is in the book my surgeon gave me (the Lap-band Solution by Paul O'Brien MD) my life looks like this:

1. Eat three or less small meals per day - nope, I am more like four small meals with a snack.
2. Do not eat anything between meals - again, not doing so well as I usually have at least one snack a day.
3. Eat slowly and stop when no longer hungry - for a while there I had really sped up with my eating again, but this last week I have been making an effort to slow down again.
4. Focus on nutritious foods - yeah, this means I need to stop eating the crap, again I have been doing better this week, but it could be a lot better!
5. Avoid calorie-containing liquids - I do okay on this one, the main calorie drink I have is my coffee and that is a protein rich drink, so not too bad.
6. Exercise for at least 30 minutes every day - at the moment I am doing the c25k, that is three times a week, and I am behind on one workout from last week, so overall, I am doing terrible on this rule.
7. Be active throughout each day - this one has greatly improved since I started the c25k. I get a lot more activity into my day. From walking about the office more, to walking up the escalators instead of just standing on them.
8. Always keep in contact with your surgeon - well I am over-due for an appointment, so I am just a little behind on this one.

So out of eight rules, I think I'm doing okay on three of them, need work on a few more and really need to restart on a few of them.

And I wonder why I ain't at goal yet :o)

So I am taking some advice I have heard in videos from BandedWendy and am changing my weigh in day to Monday, it is the day I was banded back on Monday March 22, 2010, so I should take advantage of it to help me stay on track through the weekends. And hopefully keep me more accountable on my journey. I am going to go see my GP for a new referral letter to my surgeon, as they only last a year. And I'm going to stop feeling sorry for myself and get on with it.

I keep forgetting that I have lost 40kg / 88lb, and that is a great accomplishment, no matter how much more I still have to go, that in itself is proof that I can do this. I will make it to my goal weight.

So here is the technology that all good lap banders should be using every day :o)

There is no surprise that the inspiration for this photo is from me relearning how to measure my food this last week. More on that to come soon.

Enjoy the blue pic of technology; nothing high tech is needed to be successful on this journey, but you do need the basics.

Here's hoping the new week will be as good for me as this last one has been after re-discovering the basic rule of measuring my food and keeping it under a cup.

Oh yeah, and next week the topic will be 'On the Shelf' not sure what that will be, have to think of something :o)
